The United Kingdom’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) visa is an entry requirement introduced to enhance border security and streamline the entry process for non-visa nationals.

As of April 2025, travellers from all visa-exempt countries must obtain an ETA before entering the UK for short stays, including tourism, business, or transit.

Bridging the Gap has compiled some answers to your FAQ on the ETA for the UK. If the article does not answer your question, please feel free to contact us directly

What is the ETA?

The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a digital permission that allows eligible travellers to visit the UK for short stays of up to six months for purposes such as tourism, business, visiting family and friends. It is not a visa and does not guarantee entry into the UK. Travellers must still pass through UK border control upon arrival.

Why did the UK introduce the ETA?

The ETA was introduced to align the UK with similar systems used by countries like the United States and Canada. It aims to pre-screen travellers before arrival to ensure safety and efficiency at the border.

Do South Africans need to apply for the ETA?

South Africans are not listed among the nations that must apply for the ETA.

The UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system primarily affects nationals from visa-exempt countries. As a South African citizen, you are not impacted by this change and should continue to follow the existing visa application process when planning to visit the UK.  Please speak to your Bridging the Gap Migration for advice on the most suitable visa for your UK visit.

However, if you hold dual citizenship and possess a passport from a visa-exempt country (such as Australia or New Zealand), you may be eligible to apply for an ETA using that passport. The ETA is linked to the passport used during the application, so it’s important to travel with the same passport.

I have dual South African and British Citizenship. Do I need to apply for the ETA to travel to the UK?

No, you do not need an ETA if you are a dual citizen with British or Irish citizenship. You must carry your valid British, Irish or other valid passport containing your certificate of entitlement when travelling.

Who needs to apply?

Nationals from countries that do not require a visa for short stays in the UK must apply for an ETA before traveling. This includes citizens from the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and EU member states.

You can check whether your nationality requires you to apply for an ETA here – https://www.gov.uk/guidance/check-when-you-can-get-an-electronic-travel-authorisation-eta#who-can-apply-now

Who is exempt from the ETA requirement?

You also do not need to apply if one of the following apply to you.

  • Are a British or Irish citizen.
  • Hold a UK visa or have permission to live, work, or study in the UK (including settled or pre-settled status).
  • Are transiting through a UK airport without passing through border control.
  • Hold a British Overseas Territories citizen passport or a British National (Overseas) passport.
  • Live in Ireland and travel from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man.
  • Is a child traveling on an approved France-UK school trip.
  • Are exempt from immigration control.

How much does it cost?

As of April 9, 2025, the application fee for an ETA is £16. Applications can be submitted through the official UK ETA app or the GOV.UK website.

How long does it take to get an ETA?

Most ETA applications are processed within three working days. However, some applications may take longer, so applying well before your travel date is advisable.

Does it guarantee entry into the UK?

No, an ETA does not guarantee entry. It grants permission to travel to the UK, but a UK Border Force officer must still clear you upon arrival. They may refuse entry if you do not meet the requirements.
