Further changes to the UK Immigration rules will take effect on 22 July 2025. The UK government will implement significant immigration reforms, marking a decisive tightening of migration policy. These changes are expected to directly affect many South Africans who plan to work in the UK in the future.
At Bridging the Gap Migration, we are committed to guiding our clients through this evolving landscape. These changes present new challenges, and it is more important than ever to rely on a reputable, experienced immigration firm to secure your UK future.
Key Immigration Changes Coming into Effect
Care Worker Visas to Be Scrapped
The UK government is ending the overseas recruitment of care workers. This decision is part of a broader effort to reduce net migration and has been met with widespread concern, given that the UK care sector still faces over 130,000 vacancies. The impact for South Africans will be that it will effectively close this route to those without formal degrees. Although transitional provisions will be available for those already in the UK, new applicants will no longer be eligible to apply for this route.
Increase in Skilled Worker Visa Requirements
The salary threshold for Skilled Worker visas will increase from £38,700 to £41,700 per annum. The skills requirement will also be raised to degree level. About 111 occupations will no longer be eligible under the Skilled Worker route. In future, applicants without a UK-equivalent bachelor’s degree will be excluded from the Skilled Worker route. The higher salary thresholds also mean employers must now offer significantly more competitive pay. This could narrow the range of viable job offers for South African professionals.
New Temporary Shortage List Introduced
A temporary shortage list will run until the end of 2026, allowing certain sub-degree-level roles to be filled. However, migrants on this route cannot bring dependents and will lose access to discounted visa fees and salaries.
Further Changes Expected by the end of 2025
The UK Home Office has confirmed plans to introduce stricter English language requirements, as well as increase the Immigration Skills Charge. These measures will continue the trend of discouraging lower-skilled or financially constrained migrants
